The Bhoj University was formed in the year 1991 by the act of state assembly of Madhya Pradesh when the Govt. of India made a very important decision to expand and promote distance education and gave orders to form a open university in every state. Thus Madhya Pradesh Bhoj (Open) University or shortly known as MPBOU came into existince by Central Advisory Board of Education CABE.

The name to the Bhoj University was to illustrate the great king and to honour a good learner King Raja Bhoj Deva. He was a ruler of Malwa. He was a good listner, learner, ruler and scholar. He built a famous sanskrit university at Dhar known a Bhojshala. Subjects like alankara, astronomy, grammar, philosophy and religion were thought in Bhojshala.
Madhya Pradesh Bhoj (Open) University, MPBOU has nearly 2 lakh students and India’s second largest open university. The university is approved by both DEC and UGC.
